Mobile Intensive Care Nurse - Training Program Required Hours and Content
I. Authority and Reference (incorporated herein by reference).
A. Division 2.5 of Health and Safety Code.
B. North Coast Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Policies and Procedures
II. Purpose
To establish the number of hours and course content for an Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN) training program in the North Coast EMS region. The MICN training program is designed to build on the skills and knowledge of the experienced Emergency Department Nurse. Instruction is tightly focused on the prehospital aspects of care. Candidates must therefore be adequately prepared with a thorough understanding of basic emergency nursing.
III. Procedure
MICN Course to consist of:
1. Minimum of sixteen (16) hours didactic material closely focusing on prehospital care only.
2. Required participation in one chart/tape audit.
3. Skills lab of sufficient duration to allow each candidate adequate opportunity for:
a. Orientation to and practice with radio equipment.
b. Simulated field assessment, report formation, and patient transport.
4. Minimum of two ride along patient contacts documented on "Verification of MICN Field Observation" form. (This requirement may be waived for candidates who can document equivalent experience. Written application for exceptions must be made to the NCEMS Medical Director.)
a. MICN candidates may assist with patient care under the direction of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) responsible for patient care.
b. Ride along may be obtained outside the local area.
5. Satisfactory completion of 10 precepted radio calls.
a. Calls may be simulated.
b. EMTs may assist in simulated calls.
c. Calls may be precepted by any MICN, but tape recordings of each precepted call must be evaluated by the base hospital Prehospital Care Nurse Coordinator (PCNC) or the MICN Principal Instructor utilizing the MICN tape audit form.
d. MICN tape audit forms completed by PCNCs will be provided to the MICN Principal Instructor.
