Subject: Manpower/Training

New Personnel Orientation and Field Preceptorship for Mobile Intensive Care Nurses

 

I. Authority and Reference (incorporated herein by reference)

A. Division 2.5 of the Health and Safety Code.

B. North Coast Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Policies and Procedures.

II. Purpose

To ensure orientation of new or challenging Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN) personnel to the EMS system in the North Coast EMS Region prior to his/her certification or authorization as such.

III. New Personnel Orientation Procedure

A. The Base Hospital Prehospital Care Nurse Coordinator or his/her designee will orient prospective MICN to base hospital operations, including, but not limited to:

1. Base hospital radio operation.

2. Documentation of radio reports and orders.

3. North Coast EMS Policies and Procedures.

4. State-mandated Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) training, unless the individual has documented evidence of having received this training.

5. North Coast EMS Rural Trauma System Orientation and Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) Program Orientation, in participating hospitals.

B. The Base Hospital New Personnel Orientation shall be at least four (4) hours and not exceed eight (8) hours.

C. Individuals requesting MICN Authorization must ride with a North Coast EMS-approved Limited Advanced Life Support/Advanced Life Support (LALS/ALS) ambulance as a third-person for at least two (2) field patient contacts. This observation will be documented by the signature of the Field Preceptor on the North Coast EMS Verification of MICN Field Observation form. This requirement may be waived for applicants who have documented equivalent experience. Written requests for exceptions must be made to the North Coast EMS Medical Director.
