POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

II. Purpose
To establish the procedure for maintaining Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-II
certification within the North Coast EMS region through training sessions and/or structured
clinical experience.
III. Procedure
A. Each EMT-II shall attend periodic training sessions or structured clinical experience, or a combination thereof, of EMT-I (basic) and EMT-II (limited advanced) life support knowledge and skills, including CPR, totaling no less than forty-eight (48) hours every two years. Of those forty-eight (48) hours, the EMT-II must attend North Coast EMS approved base hospital field care audits equalling no less than six (6) hours each year.
B. This training must be received from an EMS agency pre-approved continuing education (CE) provider and follow all California laws regarding CE, the EMS Authority CE Guidelines and North Coast EMS CE policies.
C. The only CE attendance that will count towards EMT-II recertification is that which is completed within the last twenty-four (24) months prior to application for recertification.
IV. Responsibilities
A. EMS approved CE providers shall distribute Course Completion Records, following the EMS Authority prehospital CE guidelines, to all EMT-IIs attending periodic training sessions and/or structured clinical experience and/or field care audits.
B. The EMT-II shall maintain the Course Completion Records verifying attendance at
approved CE courses for a period of no less than four (4) years.
C. The EMT-II shall submit copies of CE documentation to North Coast EMS prior to
EMT‑II recertification.
D. North Coast EMS may audit hospital records to assure that field care audit attendance
requirements have been met.
