Furosemide (Lasix) Protocol

Class:- Diuretic.
- Indications:
- Acute pulmonary edema.
- Severe congestive heart failure.
- Hypertensive crisis.
- Therapeutic Effect:
- Stimulates kidneys to excrete water, salt and potassium which leads to decreased circulating blood volume.
- Produces vasodilatation.
- Very potent with rapid onset in 5-10 minutes.
- Contraindications:
- Absolute:
- Dehydration.
- Pregnancy.
- Adverse Effects:
- Cardiac dysrhythmias.
- Transient hypotension.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Dehydration.
- Administration and Dosage:
- Adult: 40 - 80 mg slow IV over 1-2 minutes.
- Pediatric: 1 mg/ kg slow IV over 1-4 minutes.
- Special Information:
- Use cautiously in the presence of suspected AMI.
- Sulfonamide sensitive persons may develop an allergic reaction.
