Nitroglycerin Protocol
Associated Policies: 01/10/98
Class:- Nitrate.
- Indications:
- Unstable Angina Pectoris.
- Chest pain of suspected cardiac origin.
- Hypertensive emergency.
- Acute CHF / Pulmonary edema.
- Therapeutic Effects:
- Peripheral vasodilatation and decreased pre-load.
- Decreases myocardial workload and oxygen demand.
- Contraindications:
- Absolute:
- Hypersensitivity.
- Patients less than 12 years old.
- Cerebral hemorrhage.
- Head injury.
- Relative:
- Blood pressure less than 100 systolic.
- Adverse Effects:
- Transient hypotension and dizziness.
- Temporary pulsating headache.
- Facial flushing and burning under the tongue..
- Weakness and nausea.
- Administration and Dosage:
- Sublingual Only: 0.4 mg ( 1/ 150 gr. ) tablets, or metered-dose spray; repeat every 3-5 minutes if discomfort is unrelieved and systolic blood pressure remains greater than 100.
- Special Information:
- Age increases hypotensive response
- Patient should be supine or semi-fowlers position during administration.
