ALBUTEROL SULFATE: aerosolized beta-2 bronchodilator
Proventil metered dose inhaler or solution for inhalation
I. Therapeutic Effects:
A. Decreases reversible bronchospasm.
II. Indications:
A. Acute bronchial asthma.
B. Bronchospasm associated with bronchitis or emphysema.
III. Contraindications:
A. Absolute- Known hypersensitivity.
B. Relative- Hypertension.
- Coronary artery disease.
- Congestive heart failure.
- Convulsive disorders.
- Hyperthyroidism.
- Diabetes.
- Pregnancy.
IV. Dosage:
A. Metered dose inhaler- One or two inhalations repeated every 2 to 4 hours.
B. Small volume nebulizer:

V. Adverse Effects:
A. Most frequent adverse effects include exacerbation of present episode, tachycardia, and tremors.
B. Less frequent adverse effects include headache, hypertension, cough, and nausea.
VI. Special Instructions:
A. Administer with extreme caution to patients on monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants since the action of albuterol sulfate may potentiate cardiovascular effects.
B. Large doses may exacerbate preexisting diabetes and ketoacidosis.
