Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride (Benadryl) Protocol

- Class:
- Antihistamine.
- Indications:
- Severe allergic reactions.
- Anaphylactic shock.
- Acute dystonic reactions. Phenothiazine extrapyramidal reaction.
- Therapeutic Effects:
- Relief of symptoms associated with histamine excess.
- Sedative.
- Relief of dystonic reactions from medications.
- Prevention of motion sickness.
- Contraindications:
- Absolute:
- Hypersensitivity.
- Acute asthma.
- Relative:
- Presence of alcohol or other depressants.
- Adverse Effects:
- Dose-related drowsiness.
- Hypotension.
- Palpitations.
- Tachycardia or Bradycardia.
- Thickens bronchial secretions.
- Can cause excitation in children.
- Administration and Dosage:
- Adult: 25-50 mg IV slowly or IM.
- Pediatric: 1-2 mg/ kg IV, IM or IO slowly.
- Special Information:
- Adverse effects can increase with geriatric patients. Dose reduction is recommended.
